4 Differences between copywriting and content writing skills

Similar but not the same, even though they both write, copywriting  and content writing  are different things. Both also have different outputs and require different skills, you know! The output produced by a copywriter is more about writing or content that sells in order to persuade readers to buy or use a good or service. In this case, copywriters must create content that is interesting and easy to remember.

Examples of copywriting are taglines or slogans. Meanwhile, for content writers, the output produced is writing or content that is informative, educative or entertaining. Examples of content writing usually include longer types of content, such as articles or blog posts. In this case, a content writer must optimize his writing using SEO so that it can appear on search engines.

It can be seen that even though the basics of writing are the same, the goals are different. Therefore, the skills required will also be different. The following are the skills needed if you want to become a Copywriter:

  1. Can compose, arrange and play with words to promote and convince readers/buyers of the goods or services offered.
  2. Understand the basic principles of marketing, be able to analyze the target market and focus on the audience.
  3. Creative and able to create short sentences that have a big impact on the audience, such as taglines or slogans.
  4. Able to compose words that touch emotions and are memorable.

Meanwhile, the skills needed by a Content Writer are:

  1. Can write structured articles, starting from opening, problems, solutions and closing or conclusions.
  2. Have storytelling skills and be able to compose touching/impressive writing
  3. Understand the basic principles of journalism and SEO
  4. Research to enrich or strengthen the content of the writing.

Even though they both deal with writing, the positions of copywriter and content writer clearly have different writing goals so the skills required will be different and not just just writing. There are other skills that you also need to master if you want to become a copywriter or content writer. That’s all for this article, hopefully it’s useful!
